Progress as of this post:
  • Script is over half done - use of sound in script is written in alongside dialogue, physical cues.
  • Planned uses of electronic sound:
  1. Omnidirectional mic in center of room used primarily to feed a reverb algorithm to allow dynamic adjustment of the aurally perceived characteristics of the room.  Basic premise here: scenes taking place internally of the protagonist's psyche have a great amount of 'signatured' (resonant frequencies of the virtual room) reverb intended to convey a space of infinite proportion; scenes outside the character's psyche (i.e. in the 'real' world) will use an algorithm meant to give verisimilitude to the setting (such as a party, parking lot, bedroom, etc).  The 'baseline' level of reverb will always be high enough so that if the effect is cut entirely it will be an event in itself.
  2. Live processing of character's voice to convey how it has been altered over the course of his surgeries.  Also used to add emphasis to certain words or phrases.
  3. The character of the doctor will be portrayed sonically and be pre-recorded; altered to sound unnaturally smooth and sweet.
  4. The 'score': abstract, musical, pre-recorded sounds used for dramatic effect.
  5. The sonic 'set': sounds used to provide a sonic environment, serving much of the same purpose as a traditional set/props in theater.
